Portraits Of Seattle #19 Ishmael "Butterfly"...
Ishmael “Butterfly” Butler aka Palaceer Lazaro is making some of Seattle’s most exciting music right now. After the news that they recently signed to Sub Pop Records, myself and many others are anxiously awaiting the full length release from his group Shabazz Palaces. Shabazz were surrounded with mystery during 2010. Originally they stayed out of the spotlight and granted limited interviews...

Portraits Of Seattle #18 Ben Verellen
Ben Verellen is a vital part of Seattle’s music scene. Although hes an incredibly talented musician (currently playing in Helms Alee) its his local business that brought me to feature him in this series. After graduating college, Ben used his knowledge of circuitry and electronics to eventually start his own business making tube amplifiers & more recently, guitar pedals. This town...

The Head & The Heart Portraits
Had the chance to work with  Sub Pop’s newest band The Head & The Heart before they set off on a 3 month tour including European dates and all over the US. Decided on doing some studio photos (Taken at Pacific-Standard) as well as some on the historic 1889 Seattle Arthur Foss Tugboat. Here are two teasers from the shoot. More to come

Portraits Of Seattle #17 Shannon Perry
Shannon Perry is best known around Seattle as a musician. She has played with Katharine Hepburn’s Voice and more recently the infamous BUTTS duo. While I do enjoy both bands, it wasn’t her music that made me want to include her in this series but her newfound love of painting. It came at a transitional point for Shannon; as she says, she found herself going through a...

Portraits Of Seattle #16 No Touching Ground
The artwork done by No Touching Ground is in-escapable in this city. No Touching Ground is a visual artist working in various mediums who shows in gallery’s as well as doing street art type installations. I have been aware of his street pieces for years. Riding my bike around Seattle turned into almost a game of spotting his many new animals (Owl’s, Wolves, Bears, Etc..) wheat...

Kurt Cobain Upside Down
Saw this piece of Music Photo History on the light box today during a trip to drop off film at the local lab. Legendary Charles Peterson was just leaving after ordering some prints. They just happened to be from the same iconic proof sheet as this well known Kurt Cobain shot (Lower Left on the proof sheet). It was very cool to see the actual proof sheet/negs/test prints from such a well known...

Portraits Of Seattle #15 Damien Jurado
Damien Jurado is important to Seattle on so many levels. Since his first Sub Pop release in 1995 to his 2010 masterpiece Saint Bartlett (Secretly Canadian) he has made music rooted here that tell’s visual stories you can only find in the northwest. I have been a fan of Damien’s music for years and felt like the various changes in his records show a truly gifted song writer who is not...

Portraits Of Seattle #14 The Maldives
The Maldives hold a special place in my musical heart. My first experience with them was catching them opening up for a band I was very excited to see at The Tractor 3-4 years ago. Their set instantly blew me away and they really stole the show that night. It was obvious these guys were a family and I’m thankful to have gotten to be around this family as much as I have this past year. 2010...

Portraits Of Seattle #13 Marshall "STACK" Reid
I’m afraid to even think about what the state of Skateboarding in Seattle would be in 2011 without Marshall “STACK” Reid. Often referred to as the grandfather of skateboarding in Seattle, his presence is felt in almost all aspects of skating here. He originally started skating in 1982 and began building ramps around town. Shortly after this he started Manik in 2001. As he said,...

Portraits Of Seattle #12 Andrew Waits
Andrew Waits has an unmistakable eye for symmetry. Although his body of work enters various realms of photography, he has crafted a style that is truly unique to him and is always noticeable in the work. We originally became friends through photography and a group shoot I threw together several years ago at the Clise Mansion in Redmond, WA. Since then I have enjoyed watching both him and I jump...

Inspiration Day: Les Krims
Brooklyn’s Les Krims produced some of the most disturbing/provocative work I’ve ever seen. Most of which was done in the 70’s. His very limited Deer Slayers book is still on my wish list. He finally has a website up with a good record of this work as well as a good interview with Tokion’s Editor. Check it out here: http://www.leskrims.com/

Portraits Of Seattle #11 April Brimer
April Brimer’s blog is entitled Strange Magic. I couldn’t imagine a better way to describe her amazing artwork. The photos have a surreal/magical quality that create such strong emotions and curiosity about the subjects and the story she is telling. Her technical skill is also undeniably apparent as the images are lit/edited to perfection. The above image is still one of favorites...

Portraits Of Seattle #10 Shaun Kardinal
Shaun Kardinal’s website bio reminds me a lot of myself when he says “I am constantly inspired by, frustrated with, raving about, and occasionally crushed by the work around me.” He creates his very diverse body of artwork for various reasons (Some I find very funny/honest that he talks about in Andrew’s interview below) . Shaun’s personality and attitude about art...
